Shafali Verma scales T20I record as India Women return to winning ways

India Women shrugged off their shock defeat to Pakistan by thrashing Bangladesh in their subsequent outing. The win further strengthened their dominant run this Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2022, as they continue to top the points table.

Indian openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana were the architects of the win, as the duo staged a 96-run stand inside the first 12 overs of the match. Moreover, Verma charted 55 runs in the innings and marked the fourth T20I half-century of her career.

During the course of her match-winning knock, the youngster also went past the 1,000-run mark in the format.

Shafali Verma surpasses Jemimah Rodrigues 

Shafali Verma whacked a rapid 55 from just 44 balls, and struck five boundaries and two sixes in the process. The cricketer, who made her T20I debut against South Africa in September 2019 at a tender age of 15, has now completed 1,000 runs in the format.

At 18 years and 253 days, the batting prodigy has now become the youngest ever cricketer (men or women) to achieve the record. She overtook her teammate Jemimah Rodrigues, who achieved the feat at the age of 21 years and 32 days.

Verma averages of 24.66 in T20Is and has four half-centuries to her name. She is now slated to reprise her role for the Indian team in their upcoming Asia Cup 2022 clash against Thailand Women on October 10.

While Harmanpreet Kaur and co. have pretty much sealed the deal for a spot in the semi-finals, the ‘Women in Blue’ will be looking to top the points table before the knockouts.
