Former Australian Test captain Tim Paine is all set to play for Tasmania in the upcoming Sheffield Shield 2022-23 competition. Tasmania will play their opening Sheffield game against Queensland on October 6 at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

Paine has not played First-Class cricket since April 2021 after being involved in a scandal with an ex-colleague. Pat Cummins took charge of Australia in the 2021 Ashes series after Paine decided to resign following the controversy.

As quoted by ESPNcricinfo, Tasmania coach Jeff Vaughan confirmed that Paine is up for selection and the management will have a talk with the player himself.

"So he’s been training with us most sessions the last five or six weeks. Physically, (he’s) going well, emotionally going well. I’m sure everyone would agree that we trust his wicket-keeping skill set, his leadership skill set, so he’s up for selection.

“Like any of our contracted players and like any of our players in Tasmanian premier cricket, he‘s up for selection and one we will certainly speak about."

Paine will miss the side's opening round of the Marsh Cup 2022 against South Australia on Wednesday (28 September).
