Team India stacked up 208-6 off their 20 overs in the first T20I of their home series against Australia. Hardik Pandya unleased the finishing fury in the death overs after KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav provided the much-needed spark following early setback.

Notably, several of the ‘Men in Blue’ batters scaled major milestones during the course of the high-scoring innings. Here is a look at some of the records shattered by Rohit Sharma and co.

Rohit Sharma matches Martin Guptill’s sixes tally

Indian captain and opening batter Rohit Sharma struck a six and a boundary during his short nine-ball stay at the crease. The lone maximum of his innings marked the 172nd of his T20I career, thus equalling him with all-time record holder Martin Guptill.

The two openers now jointly lead the six-hitting charts in T20Is, and they are followed by West Indies’ T20 barbarian with 124 sixes.

Sharma joins New Zealanders in rare home record

Captain Sharma also became the first Indian cricketer and third overall to play 50 T20I matches at home. The only other players to do so are New Zealand stalwarts Guptill and Tim Southee.

Suryakumar Yadav scales 50 sixes

Suryakumar Yadav has completed 50 sixes in international cricket, having made his debut just a little over a year ago. The cricketer clubbed four maximums in his recent knock against Australia, to take his T20I tally from 45 to 49 sixes.

Just one big hit away to reach 50 in the shortest form of the game, the right-hander also has three to his credit in ODIs, thus putting his overall international tally at 52 sixes.

KL Rahul completes 2,000 in T20Is

Charismatic opening batsman KL Rahul notched up his 18th T20I half-century through his 35-ball 55. His blazing knock also took him past 2,000 runs in the format, making him only the third Indian men’s batter after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Hardik Pandya’s lower-order blitz continues

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya registered his second 50-plus T20I score this year while batting at number five or below. No other Indian has achieved the feat in a calendar year. The inning also marked his seventh 30-plus score of the year, thus extending his 2022 dominance.

Previously, Dinesh Karthik and former captain MS Dhoni had listed three 30-plus T20I scores in two separate years each. Suresh Raina also went above 30 on three occasions while batting at number five or below during the 2012 calendar year.

Batters extends team record in the format

India’s 208-6 against Australia at Mohali marked their 23rd 200-plus total in a T20I inning. South Africa with 17 such totals is placed at second on the batting-heavy list, followed by England and New Zealand with 15 each.
