The Oval Invincibles struck gold for the second time in two years by successfully defending their Women’s Hundred title at Lord’s on Saturday, September 3.

Having lost the toss and asked to field upfront, the Suzie Bates’ drawcards strangled Southern Brave’s run-flow in their opening innings. Later in the evening, they easily hunted down a meagre target, with overseas star Marizanne Kapp top-scoring in the run-chase.

Southern Brave lost in-form Indian opener Smriti Mandhana for just 17. Sophia Dunkley and Talia McGrath provided some stability in the middle overs before losing the plot completely.

Following Dunkley’s dismissal, the Brave batters were made to earn their runs, crawling their way to just 101-7 off their 100 balls.

For the Invincibles, Kapp picked up a wicket late in the innings while her South African teammate Shabnim Ismail snared two. Young all-rounder Alice Capsey also managed two wickets with her off-breaks and delivered an economical 20-ball spell in the final.

The response featured three early hiccups, all within the first 32 balls of the innings. Kapp, who picked up a wicket earlier, anchored the run-chase with an unbeaten 37. Capsey also scored a valiant 25 before Emily Windsor brought up the winning boundary.
