Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene has termed Indian superstar, Virat Kohli's ongoing lean patch as 'unfortunate' but the former cricketer has complete faith in the latter's ability to stage a comeback.

The legendary Kohli has hit a roadblock this year. While he didn't score a century across any format in 2021 as well, the former skipper was consistently accumulating 50s, especially in white-ball cricket.

However, this year, Kohli has looked woefully out of depth and his underwhelming numbers in IPL and in whatever games he has played for India testify that.

Having said that, it just takes one innings for a player for Virat's class to turn it all around.

Speaking on the latest episode of The ICC Review, Jayawardene echoed the same sentiments.

The current Mumbai Indians coach said that Kohli has all the 'tools' to come out from his ongoing slump.

"It is unfortunate what Virat is going through right now at the moment, but he is a quality player. I believe Virat has the tools to come out of it (the form slump). He has done that in the past as well and I’m sure he’ll come through this. Class is permanent and form is temporary," as quoted by India Today."

Will Virat Kohli find form in the Asia Cup?

Meanwhile, Kohli will return to international cricket following a short break with the upcoming Asia Cup.

The 33-year-old was rested for the white-ball tour of the Caribbean, where India swept the ODI and T20I series with comfortable margins.

This will be Kohli's first appearance in the Asia Cup since the 2016 event. He did feature in the last edition (2018) due to back spasm issues.

Kohli boasts of an excellent record in the Asia Cup. In 16 games, the cricketer has scored 766 runs at an average of 63.83/99.60 with 5 50+ scores, including 2 hundreds and his career-best score of 183.

The Indian fans will hope that the erstwhile run-machine resurfaces again when Kohli takes guard against Pakistan on August 28.
