The All-India Senior Selection Committee announced the 15-member  squad for Asia Cup 2022 on Monday (August 8).

Although experienced players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are back on the team, pacer Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out due of the tournament due to a back injury.

Furthermore,  Mohammed Shami could not find a place in the squad, despite his improved performances in the recent editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Lately, Shami has translated his red-ball success to white-ball cricket as well. In the IPL 2022, the 31-year-old pacer picked wickets consistently in the powerplay, while defending well in the death overs. In 16 appearances, he scalped 20 wickets and helped Gujarat Titans to lift the title.

In place of Shami, the selectors have favoured the young pacer Avesh Khan, who has been rather ordinary in his international appearances. In 13 T20Is, the 25-year-old has bagged 11 wickets at an economy of 8.67.

The team announced to feature in the Asia Cup will most likely be the Indian contingent for the T20 World Cup 2022 as well. The left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is likely to partner with Bumrah, after the latter recovers from the injury.

Twitter Reactions

The renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle thinks Shami isn't part of the skipper Rohit Sharma's plans for the T20 World Cup 2022.

One of the fans questioned the tactics of the selectors to name Deepak Chahar as the backup, who has not played competitive cricket for the last six months.

Another fan questioned the selectors' decision, to not pick an experienced Shami to fill the boots of injured Bumrah in the Asia Cup.

It certainly will be difficult for the Men in Blue to secure a victory against their arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022.
