"It's a good headache to have" – Mark Boucher on T20 World Cup selections

South Africa has enjoyed a successful run in white-ball cricket in recent times. After mauling the Three Lions in their own den 2-1 in a three-match T20 series, the Proteas nation swatted aside Ireland in two short-format games in Bristol.

With the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 just two months away, South Africa is going to have a big headache while contemplating the spots for the marquee event. However, this time around it is a 'problem of plenty' with the Proteas nation.

The head coach Mark Boucher has recently acknowledged the issue and conceded that the selection committee will have to make some tough choices while picking up a 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup.

"There is great competition in the squad at the moment and in quite a few positions as well," Boucher said after South Africa pummeled Ireland by 44 runs in the second T20I.

"We did give a couple of opportunities to guys to see what they can do, and they came good, which is great for us to see."

"I like that the guys are playing the brand of cricket we want to see and that's exciting. It's not maverick cricket, it's smart cricket, and our skill levels have been up. It can only be good for our squad if guys are challenging each other for spots," Boucher added.

We have got tough choices to make: Mark Boucher

Reeza Hendricks, South Africa's star opening batter has shellacked four back-to-back half centuries and has thrown his hat in the ring for the opening spot in the T20 World Cup.

Rilee Rossouw also made a resounding comeback to international cricket after a long gap of almost six years while the young Tristan Stubbs impressed one and all with his power-hitting in recent times.

Aiden Markram and David Miller, on the other hand, are the best T20 batters for South Africa currently and the duo seem to have their slots already sealed in the team.

Boucher, meanwhile, labelled it as a "good headache" for the team management as several players, especially in the batting department are competing for the same spots and are vying to prove their mettle to make a case for themselves for the showpiece tournament.

"It's a good headache to have when there are so many guys vying for positions with a World Cup around the corner.

"I don't want to give out too much. That's a strategy I wouldn't want to give away. I'm a part of a selection panel, and we've got some tough choices to make.

"I'm sure we will make those. There are a lot of guys competing and, unfortunately, we can only take 15 to the World Cup," Boucher added.

South Africa after completing a successful run in the limited-over series against England will now be preparing for a three-match Test series against Ben Stokes-led side that gets underway at Lord's on 17 August.
