Australia women's team captain Meg Lanning said that she will have nightmares after dropping a regulation catch and denying Alana King a rare hat-trick at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Led by leg-spinner Alana King's miraculous spell of 4/8, the Australian women's team thumped Barbados women's team by nine wickets in their second Group A game to book their place in the Commonwealth Games T20 semi-finals.

Barbados were languishing at 53/6 after the end of 14 overs. It was in the 15th over of the match when King created the hat-trick opportunity by dismissing two Barbados batters on the third and fourth delivery of the over to leave the Caribbean side reeling at 53/8. Keila Elliott facing the hat-trick delivery produced a nick and the ball flew towards Lanning, but the Aussie skipper couldn‘t hold onto the straightforward catch at first slip.

Despite the victory, Lanning was disappointed with a dropped catch that would have given Alana King just the second T20I hat-trick for Australia. Expressing her disappointment over the dropped opportunity, Lanning said she tried her best but could not hold on to the catch.

“I’ll have nightmares, I wanted to dig a hole and jump in it as quick as I could. I tried my best and I dropped it, wasn’t overly pleased, let’s put it that way. I was just disappointed for Kingy (Alana King). She was bowling so well, and to let her down like that was not ideal. But that’s cricket, I guess. I was just keen to contribute. I was pouncing on some loose balls when I got them and giving myself a chance, and it felt like I was able to do that.”
