Bavuma feels like Brevis needs time before national call-up

Give Dewald Brevis time and space before calling him for South Africa, says captain Temba Bavuma

Ever since his staggering performance in the ICC Under-19 World Cup for South Africa in the West Indies earlier this year, Dewald Brevis has been creating waves across the cricketing world.

The cricketing prodigy found himself playing alongside Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kieron Pollard after being purchased by the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

South Africa's limited-overs skipper Temba Bavuma has given his opinion after calls for Brevis' inclusion in the squad for the India tour gained momentum.

Bavuma made it clear that it is too early for the youngster to play on the international stage, having not played any First-Class games.

According to ewn.co.za, Bavuma explained, "He's set the world alight with his performances at under-19 level and the bit that he has shown at the IPL competition as well. In all fairness to him, he hasn't played a first-class game of cricket here at home.

I think it would be fair to allow him to play a couple of first-class games where he can really get an understanding of his game. It'll be a lot of pressure to throw him into the international set-up and kind of expect him to make big plays within the team,"

Dubbed 'AB Baby' by fans all over for this alikeness to Ab de Villiers, Brevis has scored 161 runs in his seven appearances for MI, with a top score of 49.

Bavuma went further on to explain what Brewis should do before having any international aspirations.

"He'll be treated like any other exciting, young prospect that comes on to the scene. He'll be looked after as well as he can be. But I think he should be given time and the space to hone his game within our system and ease into the international side of things," the 32-year-old concluded.

The 19-year-old was the player of the tournament, having scored 506 runs, the most in a single edition of a U-19 WC.

He is also handy with the ball, picking up seven wickets with his leg spin. Interestingly, Brewis' first wicket in the IPL was Virat Kohli.
