Islamabad United captain Shadab Khan delivered a masterclass in power-hitting to lead his team to a thumping eight-wicket victory against the defending champions Lahore Qalandars in the high-octane opening match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.

Shadab Khan lit up PSL 2024 with spectacular assault on Haris Rauf

In a chase that seemed to test the mettle of United, it was Shadab Khan's fearless batting under pressure that turned the game on its head. With United chasing a formidable target of 196 on a batting paradise, the match reached a crucial juncture needing 32 runs from 24 balls.

The atmosphere was electric, the pressure immense as Haris Rauf, known for his death bowling, stepped up to bowl. It was here that Shadab Khan, displaying his leadership, took the game by the scruff of its neck.

The first of Shadab Khan's consecutive sixes was a spectacle of brute force; facing a half volley from Rauf, he unleashed a ferocious slog over deep mid-wicket. The ball sailed far into the stands as he made a statement of intent and power.

Not content with just one display of dominance, Shadab then showcased his finesse. He created room for himself and dispatched Rauf's next delivery over cover for another maximum. These back-to-back sixes not only reduced the equation significantly but also shifted the momentum firmly in Islamabad United's favour, electrifying the crowd and demoralizing the opposition.

Shadab's innings, culminating in an unbeaten 74 off 41 balls was decorated with six fours and five sixes. In tandem with Salman Ali Agha, who contributed a swift 64 not out off 31 balls, Shadab stitched together a match-winning partnership of 138 runs. Their partnership was particularly critical after United had lost their openers, Colin Munro and Alex Hales, with the score at 62 in the eighth over.

Meanwhile, by taking on one of the best bowlers in the opposition under high-pressure conditions and coming out on top, Shadab ensured Islamabad United started their PSL 2024 campaign with a stunning victory, setting the tone for the season ahead.
