At the M.A Chidambaram Stadium, a spinner's paradise, New Zealand's Mitchell Santner delivered a piece of bowling brilliance to achieve his 100th ODI wicket during the World Cup 2023 clash against Afghanistan on Wednesday in Chennai.

NZ vs AFG: Santner bagged 100th ODI wicket with a mesmerizing ball

The lanky off-spinner, who is no stranger to the conditions of Chennai due to his stint with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, made a lasting impression in the match, particularly with his dismissal of Mohammad Nabi.

It was this very familiarity that came into play during the 31st over. Firing in a deceptively quicker delivery on a precise middle-stump trajectory, Santner got the ball to spin slightly after pitching. Nabi was lulled into playing a straighter line.

To his dismay, the ball sneaked past his defense and went on to crash into the stumps as he walked back to the pavilion after scoring just 7 runs off 9 balls. The brilliance of this delivery was underlined by its significance in Santner's career, marking his 100th ODI wicket.

However, Santner wasn't done for the day. He returned in the 35th over to clinch the final two wickets, ensuring a comprehensive win for New Zealand by 149 runs, restricting Afghanistan to a total of 139. With these scalps, he also became the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing World Cup with 11 wickets in just 4 matches.

Earlier in the day, the Kiwis set up a challenging total of 288/6 on a difficult Chennai surface, with commendable fifties from Will Young, skipper Tom Latham, and Glenn Phillips. While the day had its share of exceptional performances, Santner's milestone, and especially his brilliant dismissal of Nabi will be remembered by fans for a long time.
