Ibrahim Zadran was dismissed for a two-ball duck by Sri Lankan paceman Asitha Fernando in the opening over of the match. Shrugging off his first-innings setback, the cricketer pumped out over 100 unbeaten runs a couple of days later to lead Afghanistan’s fightback amidst a 241-run halfway deficit.

With three prior half-centuries to his credit, Zadran overcame his previous Test best of 87 during the twilight stages of Day 3, and went on to list his maiden century in the format with an elegant punch towards deep point off Fernando.

The 22-year-old eventually survived till stumps to reach 101* from 217 balls, and will resume Afghanistan’s second innings alongside number three batsman Rahmat Shah.
