Mumbai Indians quick Gerald Coetzee crashed Punjab Kings’ uprising by getting rid of dangerman Ashutosh Sharma towards the finishing stages of their IPL 2024 thriller at Mullanpur.

By the time of his dismissal, Ashutosh had already played an innings to remember, whacking an unmitigated 61 from just 28 balls before he was holed out by Mohammad Nabi near the boundary rope.

Punjab Kings were reeling at 14-4, soon to 49-5 and 77-6 before number eight batter and IPL 2024 cult hero Ashutosh Sharma made his way to the crease. In a bid to up the scoring rate, the 25-year-old shared steady partnerships with Shashank Singh and Harpreet Brar to take Punjab Kings past the 150-run mark.

With his presence at the crease, Punjab Kings even entertained thoughts of pulling off a remarkable heist against Mumbai Indians in a potential thriller. Ashutosh ended up smearing 61 runs from 28 balls with a couple of boundaries and seven sixes to his credit, thus bringing down Punjab Kings’ required equation to 25 runs from the remaining three overs.

However, their ambitions came to a crashing end after Ashutosh swatted Gerald Coetzee for a huge hit, only to find an agile Mohammad Nabi near the boundary.

Ashutosh Sharma’s dismissal eventually turned out to be a defining moment in the game, considering the hosts were shortly folded up for 183 in the final over. Mumbai Indians ended up surviving Ashutosh’s scare to walk away with a nine-run win.

Earlier in the match, Mumbai Indians had conjured 192-7 off the back of Suryakumar Yadav’s 53-ball 78 and dazzling 30s from Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma.
