After much hard work and grit, Shubman Gill gifted his wicket away to debutant Tom Hartley as India lost its top order in the first hour of the second day's play.

Indian young generation Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill averted damage on the final hour of Day 1's play as the hosts found themselves in the driver's seat during stumps.

Now, on Day 2, Jaiswal and Gill had the opportunity to convert the sublime starts into a big score. However, the opener failed as he perished early into the day to former English skipper Joe Root.

Regardless, Shubman Gill looked headstrong until Ben Stokes invited spin into the attack. Gill struggled with his defense. Yet, his focus kept him going. The batter strived in the middle to somehow surpass the initial jitters of the first session.

However, Gill lost his cool when he tried to attack debutant Tom Hartley. Tom bowled a flighted delivery, which drifted in for Gill as the batter looked to slam it over the mid-wicket for a boundary. However, it was a doubtful shot as Gill wasn't confident and ended up playing straight to Ben Duckett at short mid-wicket.

The fielder took a regulation catch to end Gill's resilient stay at the crease. With that, India lost both overnight batters in the first hour of the play as England sensed an opening.

As it stands, the game is evenly poised. The trail is under 100, and a big partnership here would turn things around in the host's favor.

However, on the flip side, a couple of wickets in this session will put England at the forefront.

That being said, the wicket of Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium has aided spinners heavily and is expected to worsen for the batter as and when the game progresses. Chasing for India is expected to be an uphill task.
