Sri Lanka got off to a perfect start against Afghanistan on Tuesday (September 5) in the final Group fixture of the Asia Cup 2023 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. The defending champions sprinted to 62 runs in the first 10 overs without losing a wicket thanks to their explosive openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka.

Initiating play with a stunning boundary off the third ball of the day, bowled by Fazalhaq Farooqi, Dimuth Karunaratne set the tone for Sri Lanka. Karunaratne timed the ball perfectly to punch it through the covers for four runs after the Afghan left-arm quick bowled a shortish delivery outside the off stump.

After bowling two balls, Farooqi bowled a fullish delivery, aiming at Karunaratne's pads. With both hands, the Sri Lankan opener accepted the present and whipped it for another boundary between mid-on and mid-wicket.

However, Karunaratne failed to convert his start into anything substantial. He lost his wicket to Gulbadin Naib in the 11th over after scoring a superb 35-ball 32, laced with six boundaries.

Sri Lanka, at the time of writing, have reached 74 for 1 after 13.4 overs, with Pathum Nissanka batting on 37* alongside just-joined Kusal Mendis.
