Sri Lanka's young sensation Matheesha Pathirana has had a glorious journey in the Asia Cup 2023. The IPL star, who represents MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings in the lucrative league, began his maiden Asia Cup campaign with a spectacular four-fer against a strong Bangladeshi outfit in Sri Lanka's inaugural game. Tonight, he resumed his onslaught from where he left, rattling Afghanistan's top order through the prized scalp of Gulbadin Naib in the ninth over. 

Chasing a challenging target of 292, Afghanistan got off to a disastrous start, losing openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran in quick succession. But Gulbadin Naib, promoted to number three, came out with all guns blazing, taking on the Lankan bowlers from the word go. 

However, Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka's decision to turn up to his trump card Matheesha Pathirana proved to be a masterstroke as the ace pacer trapped Naib with a beautiful delivery. 

The ball pitched around the middle stump line and jagged back into Naib, catching him plumb in front of the stumps. The breakthrough was crucial from Sri Lanka's perspective, as the batter was running away with the game through his scintillating stroke play. 

However, after Naib departed, Rahmat Shah and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi have steadied the Afghan ship, powering them to 93 for three in 14.4 overs as of writing.
