Sri Lanka's campaign at the World Cup 2023 hit another low during their match against New Zealand at Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday. In Match 41 of the tournament, the Sri Lankan team's struggles are once again in the spotlight.

NZ vs SL: Sri Lanka in disarray as Dhananjaya de Silva loses wicket at a crucial juncture

The Lankans, who have already been eliminated from the tournament contention, continued its disappointing performance. After being put in to bat, Sri Lanka's innings was characterized by a lack of stability, with most of the batters failing to make a significant impact.

The notable exception was opener Kusal Perera, who provided a rare highlight with a remarkable 22-ball fifty. His innings stood out for its aggression and set a record for the fastest fifty in the tournament. However, his efforts were not enough to stabilize the innings, as wickets fell at regular intervals around him.

The most recent setback has come with the dismissal of Dhananjaya de Silva, often considered the team's crisis man. On this occasion, however, de Silva could not steer the team out of trouble. He was dismissed for 19 runs off 24 balls, just as he seemed to be getting settled.

His dismissal occurred in the 19th over off the bowling of New Zealand's Mitchell Santner. De Silva, attempting to play a flighted delivery outside off stump, edged the ball to the slip cordon, marking another blow to Sri Lanka's already stuttering innings

Meanwhile, despite Perera's explosive start, Sri Lanka found themselves in a dismal position at 105/7 after 19 overs. The responsibility of guiding the team to a respectable total has now fallen to the lower-order batsmen, Chamika Karunaratne and Maheesh Theekshana. With the top and middle order having failed to capitalize, the task ahead of them seems challenging.
