India’s all-format star Shreyas Iyer made his return to competitive cricket for Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy 2024 semifinal clash against Tamil Nadu. However, his much-awaited return turned out to be a damp squib affair for fans of the cricketer, considering he managed to score just three runs from his troubled eight-delivery stay at the crease.

Shreyas Iyer fails in Ranji Trophy return

Shreyas Iyer, batting at number six for Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy 2024 semifinal clash against Tamil Nadu, made his way to the crease following the dismissal of his captain Ajinkya Rahane at 91-4.

With young Musheer Khan holding Mumbai’s run-scoring charge from the other end, Iyer failed to provide any support as the senior Indian batter was done-in by a short delivery from Sandeep Warrier.

The 29-year-old eventually walked back to the sheds with an eight-ball three to his name as Mumbai slipped to 96-5 in 40.1 overs.

Shreyas Iyer was recently snubbed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from their annual contract list alongside fellow national teammate Ishan Kishan.

Iyer, who featured in the 2023 World Cup despite battling pain, also represented the Indian team in the first two Tests of their home series against England earlier this year. However, his dwindling form prompted the selectors and the team management to urge him to get back to domestic cricket.

Regardless, Shreyas Iyer will soon be seen leading the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise in the forthcoming IPL 2024 season. The much-awaited tournament is scheduled to commence from March 22 onwards.
