Shreyas Iyer During Duleep Trophy - (Source : @Johns/X.com)
On Sunday, September 7, India star batter Shreyas Iyer made his first appearance after being appointed as India A captain for the upcoming series against Australia A in September. Notably, Iyer is a part of the West Zone in the ongoing Duleep Trophy semi-finals, but has failed to impress in the BCCI's premier red-ball domestic tournament.
Iyer Disappoints In Duleep Trophy
Iyer, who registered a low score in the first innings, failed to turn around things in the second innings and returned to the pavilion for a low score of just 12 (14), which featured a solitary four and a six.
Iyer's failure resulted in West Zones crashing out of the semi-finals, as the Rajat Patidar-led side, Central Zone, now proceeds to face South Zone in the final.
Shreyas Iyer Demotes Himself In 2nd Innings
In the second innings, Iyer made a significant difference to his batting position as a right-handed batter came to bat at No.7. Usually, Iyer walks to bat at No.3 or No.4, but in the second innings, he shuffled with his batting order, but the result didn't go in his favour.
The internet is buzzing with Iyer's move, and several are speculating whether he would bat at a new position for India in the upcoming Test series against the West Indies. Notably, the right-handed batter is most likely to make his red-ball return after a two-year hiatus.
First, the BCCI has appointed Iyer as captain for India A and based on that, the selectors will make a call. However, the disappointment in the Duleep Trophy would definitely haunt Shreyas Iyer as the right-handed batter wouldn't want to miss out on another opportunity to represent India.
