Rohit Sharma pummelled Netherlands with a dazzling half-century in India’s final league fixture of the 2023 World Cup. Opening the innings alongside Shubman Gill, the Indian captain raced to his fourth fifty-plus score of the tournament in just the 14th over of the innings.

Employing enterprising stroke-play, the cricketer achieved the feat with eight boundaries and a six to his name. After completing the 50-run mark, Sharma launched another big hit, this time casually slog-sweeping Netherlands’ seasoned campaigner Roelof van der Merwe over backward square leg.

Remarkably, Sharma’s twin sixes against Netherlands have now taken him past former England skipper Eoin Morgan and ex-South African captain AB De Villiers for a huge World Cup batting record.

Rohit Sharma goes past Morgan, Villiers

Rohit Sharma is now the recipient of hitting the highest number of sixes in a single World Cup edition as a captain. The dashing opening batsman, through his latest knock against Netherlands, went past former England captain Eoin Morgan for his six-hitting frenzy from the 2019 edition of the tournament.

Sharma also leaped above former Proteas skipper AB De Villiers for his 21-six tally from the 2015 World Cup hosted across Australia and New Zealand. Bettering the likes of Eoin Morgan and AB de Villiers with a single stroke, here is a look at an updated list of captains with most sixes to their name in a single World Cup edition.

Rohit Sharma was eventually dismissed by Netherlands fast bowler Bas de Leede for 61. The cricketer faced just 54 deliveries in his innings, and dispatched eight of them for booming boundaries and two of them for elegant sixes.

The Indian batsman now has the opportunity to enhance his record further, considering his side is slated to face at least one more match in the ongoing 2023 World Cup. The ‘Men in Blue’, having qualified for the semi-finals, will be facing New Zealand on November 15 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium to commence the knockouts stage.
