Indian youngster and Assam superstar Riyan Parag who represents Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been one of the fine finds with staggering performances in the past few editions of domestic cricket. However, in the current season of the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy (SMAT), the right-hander played another solid match-winning knock against Bengal to take his side through to the Quarter-Finals.

Parag, who came in at the number four position, played a handsome 31-ball 50* run knock to help his team Assam chase down 139 in the Pre-Quarter Final 2. But something more interesting to know about this is that with this innings, Riyan has entered into the record books.

The 21-year-old, who has featured in eight games this season, has scored half-centuries in seven of them as barring the first game where he smashed 45, Parag has recorded all of his fifties in consecutive games making the first player to do so.

Riyan Parag in Syed Mushtaq Ali 2023:

  • 45(19) & 0/53(4)
  • 61(34) & 2/25(4)
  • 76(37) & 3/6(4)
  • 53(29) & 1/17(4)
  • 76(39) & 1/37(4)
  • 72(37) & 1/35(3)
  • 57(33) & 1/17(4)
  • 50(31) & 2/23(4)

With this, he went past Devdutt Padikkal, who held the record for six half-centuries in one season of SMAT, which he achieved in 2019.

Moreover, apart from this accolade, the right-hander has now crossed David Warner, Virender Sehwag, Jos Buttler, Kamran Akmal and Hamilton Masakadza as all of them had scored six fifties on the trot, which means he becomes the first player in history to achieve seven consecutive 50+ scores in T20 cricket.

With 490 runs in eight games at an average of more than 12 and a strike rate of around 190, Parag will be looking to continue his run when his team, Assam, faces Kerala on 2nd November in Mohali.
