IRE vs BAN, 2nd ODI | Bangladesh Edge past Ireland in Last-over Thriller

image-lhlfyo1wShanto celebrates his hundred during their second ODI match against Ireland in Chelmsford on Friday.

Bangladesh: 320/7 in 44.3 overs [Najmul Hossain Shanto- 117, Towhid Hridoy- 68; Curtis Campher- 2/37 (5), George Dockrell- 2/58 (9)] beat Ireland: 319/6 in 45 overs [Harry Tector- 140, George Dockrell- 74*; Hasan Mahmud- 2/48 (9), Shoriful Islam- 2/83 (9)] by 3 wickets.

Bangladesh secured a hard-fought victory over Ireland in a thrilling second One-Day International match on May 12, 2023. The match, held at the same venue as the first game, saw Bangladesh win by three wickets, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after the first game was called off due to rain.

Tector’s Hundred Drives Ireland to Competitive Total

After winning the toss, Bangladesh chose to bowl first and got off to a strong start. Hasan Mahmud, in particular, was impressive, taking two wickets in the first Powerplay to leave Ireland reeling at 16 for two. However, Andy Balbirnie and Harry Tector steadied the ship with a partnership of 98 runs off 104 deliveries.

Balbirnie was dismissed for 53, but Tector continued his steady play, scoring a run-a-ball half-century. With his partners falling quickly, Tector found support in Dockrell, and the duo smashed an extraordinary partnership, hitting 115 runs off just 11.2 overs. Ireland ended their innings at 319 runs for five wickets in 45 overs.

Shanto’s Maiden ODI Century Leads Bangladesh to Victory

In response, Bangladesh had a shaky start, losing Tamim Iqbal early. Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan started well, but they didn't last long, and Bangladesh found themselves at 101-3 after 17 overs. However, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Towhid Hridoy stepped up, adding 131 runs in their partnership. Shanto, in particular, was impressive, completing his maiden ODI hundred off just 83 balls, while Towhid completed his fifty off 49 balls.

But then, Bangladesh lost three wickets quickly, and Mushfiqur Rahim was left to guide the team to victory. The veteran cricketer, who has been a stalwart of the Bangladesh team for years, played a crucial role in the team's chase.

With just four runs needed off four balls, Mushfiqur hit a full toss straight to the fielder at the boundary, but luck was on Bangladesh's side, as the third umpire declared it a no-ball for being over-waist. Bangladesh won the match with one ball to spare, with Mushfiqur finishing unbeaten on 43 off 34 balls.

Overall, it was an excellent team performance from Bangladesh, with both the bowlers and batters stepping up at crucial moments.

Looking ahead to the final game of the series on May 15, Bangladesh will be full of confidence, having secured a hard-fought victory in the second game. However, they will be aware that Ireland is a talented side capable of causing an upset. Ireland, on the other hand, will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss and will be hoping that their top-order can fire in the final game.
