Babar Azam smacked a rapid 68 against Quetta Gladiators in match number two of the ongoing PSL 2024 season at Lahore. Opening the innings for Peshawar Zalmi while chasing a monumental 207-run target, the right-hander bludgeoned four boundaries and four sixes in his fluent 42-ball knock.

Despite Babar’s best efforts with the bat, Peshawar Zalmi ended up falling 16 runs short of their target as the cricketer received little-to-no assistance from the rest of the batting line-up.

Regardless, the 29-year-old did manage to claim a huge PSL record by becoming the first batsman in history to achieve a coveted run-scoring milestone.

Babar Azam becomes to tally 3,000 PSL runs

Babar Azam, who made his PSL debut back in 2016, completed 3,000 runs in his tournament-career through the course of his 68-run knock against Quetta Gladiators. In doing so, he became the first batsman in PSL history to get to the landmark figure, with second-placed Fakhar Zaman (2,381 runs) falling over 600 runs behind the legendary Pakistan opener.

With Babar Azam becoming the first batter in PSL matches to mint over 3,000 runs; here is a look at the top five highest run-scorers in the history of the tournament:

  • Babar Azam - 3,003 runs in 78 innings
  • Fakhar Zaman - 2,381 runs in 77 innings
  • Shoaib Malik - 2,135 runs in 78 innings
  • Mohammad Rizwan - 2,007 runs in 61 innings
  • Kamran Akmal - 1,972 runs in 74 innings

Moreover, Babar Azam also extended his overall T20 run-tally to 9,994 runs. As of now, the right-hander is just one big hit away from completing 10,000 runs in the format. While Babar is expected to achieve the same within the next few days, he will become only the second Pakistani batsmen in history after Shoaib Malik (13,106 runs) to register over 10,000 T20 runs in his career.

The Pakistan batting veteran can further enhance his tally, as he is slated to turn up for Peshawar Zalmi in their PSL 2024 game against Karachi Kings on February 21.
