It has been a record-breaking campaign for Afghanistan in the ongoing World Cup 2023 in India. The immaculate rise of the Afghan Atalans continues to spellbind cricket fans around the globe. Their performance has been a sight to behold and it was no different in their latest meeting against Australia on Tuesday in Match 39 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

It was an evening full of records in Mumbai for Hashmatullah Shahidi and his men. Firstly, they got their first ever centurion in World Cup history in Ibrahim Zadran, who scored a historic knock of 129* (143) and lifted Afghanistan to post their highest ever World Cup total.

They put up a total of 291 for 5 against the five-times champions and recorded their highest-ever total in ODI World Cup history. Their previous highest score was 288/10 against West Indies in the last edition back in 2019 at Leeds in Headingley.

Afghanistan won an important toss and elected to bat on a good batting track at the Wankhede. They lost in-form Rahmanullah Gurbaz early but Zadran played a brilliant knock, ensuring his side remained composed throughout the innings against a high-quality Australian attack.

The 21-year-old was well accompanied by Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai in the middle, before Rashid Khan played a brilliant cameo at the end to help them reach a formidable total.
