Why Pakistan Test Captain Shan Masood Won't Endorse Yorkshire's Sponsor In County

Pakistan Test skipper Shan Masood, currently leading the Yorkshire club, has taken a principled stance by refusing to endorse a gambling company in English County cricket.

Unlike India and Pakistan, in many parts of the Western world, gambling and sports betting are legal. Therefore, many leagues and tournaments tend to attract sponsorship bidders from the gambling industry.

Recently, Yorkshire Cricket Club, participating in the English County cricket tournament, signed a sponsorship deal with Dafabet, which required the players to don the logo of the organisation on their jerseys.

However, interestingly, Pakistan Test team captain Shan Masood, who's also leading Yorkshire this season, refused to wear the badge on his jersey as it does not align with his personal beliefs.

In Pakistan, betting is illegal and Masood is against the idea of promoting these things. Hence, he conveyed his stand to the club owners who amicably respected his belief and made an exception for the captain.

Of course the Yorkshire Club will have to bear penalties for the same as they are abided by the commercial contract.

That being said, Masood isn't the only Pakistani player to have made such special requests. Earlier, Mohammad Rizwan covered a gambling-related logo on his jersey with a tape during the recently concluded PSL season.

Besides gambling, Pakistan players also avoid promoting alcohol companies as it stands against their religious beliefs and personal moral values.

Shan Masood took over as the captain of Pakistan's Test in November after Babar Azam relinquished duties after the ODI World Cup debacle. While Azam was reinstated as white-ball captain after five months, Masood still retains the red-ball format leadership.
