Why Did ECB Force This Seamer To Opt Out Of IPL 2024? Report Explains

Released by Mumbai Indians (MI), England speedster Jofra Archer will be giving the IPL 2024 a miss entirely after being directed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to skip the upcoming auction for the tournament and be fit in time for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Amidst uncertainty around his fitness and injury rehab, Archer was released by the five-time champions MI but the right-arm quick was still expected to be up for grabs at the mini-auction to be held on December 19 in Dubai.

As it has panned out, however, the young quick will not be taking part in the next edition of the IPL as he strives hard to recover for the biannual ICC event scheduled one month later in June in the Caribbean & USA. Archer has acted on the advice provided by the ECB medical staff and has not put his name in the registered players' list for the IPL 2024 auction.

ECB pulls Jofra Archer out of IPL 2024 auction

Archer, who has faced a persistent elbow problem since March 2021, last turned up in professional cricket during IPL 2023 and played five matches of MI's campaign until recurring pain in his elbow forced the bowler out of the tournament. He recently travelled as a reserve for England during the World Cup 2023 but the elbow issue again pushed him back into rehab.

The 28-year-old wasn't part of the 34-member England contingent which has registered for the IPL 2024 auction but signed a two-year contract with the ECB stretching into 2025 summer.

It has been understood that Archer has been sidelined from the IPL by England's Director of Cricket Rob Key, who has mapped a rehab at home in April and May rather than pushing himself through the IPL grind.

"We take that bet with him that we want him back fit and able to play for England, because of the upside. You start looking at things like the Ashes in two years, the T20 World Cup… Jofra adds so much to that," Rob Key was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
