After much wait, young batting prodigy, Dewald Brevis made his international debut on Wednesday. The right-hander donned the Protean colours for the first time in the first T20I of the three-match match series against Australia at Durban.

Varma celebrated from Sri Lanka as Brevis made his international debut

The 18 months preceding Dewald Brevis’ debut saw the youngster make waves in the cricketing circuit. His explosive batting at the U19 World Cup a year ago, where he finished as the top run-scorer hinted at the prodigious talent he possessed. 

His subsequent journey in franchise T20 cricket, especially with Mumbai Indians in the IPL further consolidated his rising stature in international cricket.

Brevis' partnership at Mumbai Indians with India's emerging star, Tilak Varma is particularly noteworthy. Their bond, both on and off the field, has been nothing short of exemplary. The duo’s impeccable camaraderie reached its peak when Varma received a heartening message from Brevis wishing him success during his debut for India in West Indies earlier this month.


As Brevis was presented his debut cap by the legendary Hashim Amla, thousands of miles away, his IPL teammate, Tilak Varma who is in Sri Lanka for Asia Cup 2023 cheered him on.

Brevis and Varma’s teammate at Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar Yadav shared the candid moment where the young southpaw’s proud reaction to watching his friend get his debut cap was captured. 

"Yeah, my boy DB…Gonna debut today, good luck bro," exclaimed a beaming Varma.

With a career that holds promises reminiscent of the great AB de Villiers, all eyes now remain on Brevis as he takes his first strides in international cricket.
