Veteran Australian opener Usman Khawaja attributed his decision to carry an extra bat in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) game between Brisbane Heat and Perth Scorchers to the valuable advice of his wife, Rachel Khawaja. This revelation followed an incident in which Khawaja's bat broke while opening the batting for Heat in the first innings.

During his BBL cameo for Brisbane Heat at the Gabba in Brisbane against the Scorchers, Khawaja, who is leading the Brisbane-based franchise, played a quick innings, scoring 14 runs off eight deliveries.

In an on-air interview with 7Cricket, Khawaja said, "That is absolute crap to tell to say the shoulder of the blade has broken off. It was funny, I talked to my wife today. I think I am gonna just bat… I was like, I think I’m gonna go alright. I packed in one other bat, doesn’t even face on it yet. She (Rachel Khawaja) is a prepared one… to look after us."

The replacement bat did not feature the peace symbols, which include a dove and an olive branch, representing peace, love, and harmony throughout history.

It is pertinent to note that Khawaja has received support from his Australian and Brisbane Heat teammates for his actions. After fulfilling his national duties, the 37-year-old Queenslander returned to captain the Heat against the Scorchers, alongside Marnus Labuschagne.

Both Khawaja and Labuschagne are set to join the Australian side in Adelaide on Saturday, preparing for the first Test against the West Indies, scheduled to commence on January 17. In the first Test against the Windies, Steve Smith will partner with Khawaja at the top of the order.
