Indian cricketer Umesh Yadav has penned a deal with Essex Cricket Club to play three matches in the ongoing 2023 County Championship. Each of the three planned fixtures also marks the club’s final set of Division One matches this season, with all slated to be played out in September.

Yadav was last seen in action during India’s WTC 2023 final clash against Australia at The Oval. So far, the speedster has claimed 170 Test wickets for India in his 57-match journey.

Umesh Yadav returns to County Championship

Umesh Yadav made his County Championship debut for Middlesex last year. The cricketer is all set to make a return to the championship, albeit for a separate club this time around. On August 24, the 35-year-old has been roped in by Essex to play their final three Division One matches of the 2023 season, set to be played in September.

Upon signing the contract with Essex, Yadav said:

“I am really pleased to join Essex and make what I hope will be some valuable contributions to the team’s success this year. I enjoyed playing in England with Middlesex last season, and it will be good to return and test myself in those conditions again, especially in the midst of a title race.”

Essex Head Coach Anthony McGrath also welcomed Yadav’s addition to the squad, and praised the speedster’s decade-long experience across top levels of the game. McGrath said:

“Umesh is a superb signing for us, and we all know what he will be able to bring to our attack at a crucial time of the season. He is vastly experienced and has taken wickets at the top levels of the game for more than a decade now, so as well as contributing during our run-in, we hope he can pass on some of his wisdom to our young players too.”

Essex, fresh off their five-match winning run, are currently placed at number two on the Division One points table this season. They will go up against Middlesex, also Yadav’s former club, as part of their next assignment in Chelmsford on September 4.
