The Ashes 2023 presents a unique opportunity to Australia for justifying their recent WTC winners tag, while it grants the hosts a chance to break their title drought since 2015 win at home.

Moreover, the series also presents a chance for unlocking some major individual landmarks to players from both sides. One of the prominent of them being James Anderson nearing a historic benchmark in Tests for a fast bowler.

At OneCricket, we take a look at some of the major individual milestones that can be unlocked by Australian and English players in the much-awaited 2023 Ashes series.

Steve Smith

Australian batter Steve Smith recently climbed a rung in ICC rankings, courtesy of his match-winning ton against India in the WTC final. The 34-year-old, with numerous Test batting records, can add another feather to his illustrious hat during the course of the series.

As of now, the cricketer is just 53 runs away from scaling the 9,000-run mark in Tests. In doing so, he will become only the fourth Australian in history after former captains Ricky Ponting, Allan Border and Steve Waugh to achieve the landmark.

James Anderson

England’s 40-year-old warhorse James Anderson needs just 15 more scalps to complete 700 Test wickets. The speedster is already Test cricket’s most proficient fast bowler in history, after he eclipsed Glenn McGrath’s haul of 564 wickets in 2018.

As of now, Anderson is one of only four bowlers in Test history with more than 600 wickets, and the only pacer in the elite club. Moreover, he is the third highest wicket-taker in the format after spinners Muttiah Muralidaran and Shane Warne.

Stuart Broad

Much like his new-ball companion James Anderson, 37-year-old Stuart Broad is also on a path to scale a remarkable new height in Test cricket. The Nottinghamshire wonder is currently sitting on a rich stockpile of 582 wickets.

With 18 more scalps to his name, he will become only the fifth bowler in history, and second among pacers after his teammate, to scale 600 wickets in Tests.

Nathan Lyon

Nathan Lyon is on the cusp of joining an elite Test club. Since launching his Test journey in 2011, the off-spinner has claimed 487 wickets in the format. If the 35-year-old manages another 13 wickets in the series in England, he will become only the third Australian bowler and eighth overall to breach the 500-wicket milestone.

Moreover, he will also become only the fourth spin bowler to achieve the same, after former spin legends Muttiah Muralidaran, Shane Warne and Anil Kumble.
