Mohammad Rizwan joined his skipper in the middle, as the pair showcased grit and aggression on a pitch that assisted spinners.

The world's No.3 Test batter, Azam, reached his 23rd fifty in 71 balls.

The 79-run stand between them was split when Jayasuriya cleaned up Rizwan for 37.

Fawad Alam's stay was cut short after a mix-up with Azam ended his time at the crease. Jayasuriya picked up his third wicket as Agha Salman lobbed a catch at short leg on 4.

Pakistan were 188 for 5 at lunch, still, 320 runs away from their target.
