Shubman Gill blasted 126 from just 55 deliveries and turbo-charged Punjab’s total to 225-4 against Karnataka. His knock drove Punjab to a nine-run win, and they will now face Himachal Pradesh in the first semi-final of the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022 season.

Notably, the cricketer scaled a unique T20 batting record through the course of his match-winning effort at the Eden Gardens.

Shubman Gill surpasses Virender Sehwag in an elite T20 record

Shubman Gill plundered 126 runs while facing just 55 deliveries, and dispatched 11 of them for boundaries and nine of them for sixes. His six-laden hurricane marked the first ton of his T20 career.

Additionally, his innings also marks the highest individual score by any Indian batter in a T20 knockout match. Previously, Virender Sehwag whacked 122 against the Chennai Super Kings in the playoff stages of the 2014 IPL season.

Moreover, Gill’s knock is also the highest score by any Punjab batsman in T20 cricket. Prabhsimran Singh held the previous record for scoring 119* against Goa in the 2021 edition of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Interestingly, the 23-year-old prodigy achieved the milestone a day after earning Team India call-ups for upcoming tours to New Zealand and Bangladesh. The youngster has been selected in India’s T20I and ODI squads for November trip to New Zealand, and will be a part of the Indian team in the Test segment of the subsequent tour to Bangladesh in December.
