Fans now have a new reason to talk about rising star Shubman Gill, who has clinched the top spot in the latest Yo-Yo fitness test as he registered a remarkable score of 18.7. In doing so, Gill has not only proved himself as one of the fittest cricketers on the international scene but also outshone the record of India batter, Virat Kohli, who recently revealed his Yo-Yo test score to be 17.2.

Yo-Yo test scores: Shubman Gill dethrones Virat Kohli

This rigorous test which is considered an indispensable measure of a player's endurance and fitness was held ahead of the much-awaited Asia Cup 2023. The results are a clear indication of Gill's dedication to both his on-field performance and his off-field training regimen.

Known for his elegant batting technique, the right-hander's soaring fitness levels have cemented his place as a crucial asset for the Indian side in upcoming tournaments, including the Asia Cup and World Cup 2023.

Ever since the Yo-Yo test's introduction during Kohli's captaincy tenure, post the era of MS Dhoni, it has been a focal point of discussions and debates in cricketing circles. Players are mandated to achieve a minimum score of 16.5 to qualify, setting a high standard that has seen even some of the more renowned cricketers stutter and miss out on key team selections.

Speaking to PTI on the condition of anonymity, a BCCI source shed light on the significance of the test results.

"The yo-yo test being an aerobic endurance fitness test, the results could vary from when you last played and how much of workload you have gone through in the past week. Gill as of now has the highest score of 18.7. Most of the players have scored between 16.5 and 18,” said the source.

Meanwhile, as the cricket community buzzes with Shubman Gill’s Yo-Yo test score, all eyes are now fixed on India's opening clash of Asia Cup 2023 against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele.
