After withdrawing from Bangladesh’s upcoming three ODIs and three T20Is against Sri Lanka, it has been confirmed that all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, will also be absent from the two-match Test series.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed on Thursday that Shakib will not participate in the upcoming white-ball series or the subsequent Test matches, part of the ICC World Test Championship third cycle.

The cricket operations chairman of the BCB, Jalal Yunus informed the media about Shakib's decision on Thursday.

"He (Shakib) requested a break from the entire series against Sri Lanka as he felt he needed time away from international cricket. Although his eyesight appears to be fine now, he wants a break to return to international cricket fully fit,"  Jalal Yunus stated to Cricbuzz.

Shakib al Hasan had been grappling with an eye problem since the beginning of the Bangladesh Premier League but still managed to excel with the bat, accumulating 249 runs in 11 matches.

The series against Sri Lanka, comprising three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests, commences on March 4 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. The T20I series kicks off on March 4 in Sylhet, followed by the ODI series starting on March 13 in Chattogram, and the Test series opening on March 22 in Sylhet, with the second Test scheduled for Chattogram from March 30.

Considering his absence from the national team, Shakib might feature in the upcoming Dhaka Premier League, providing him with additional batting practice for international fixtures.

Since the World Cup 2023, Shakib has refrained from participating in international matches, with Najmul Hossain Shanto assuming the captaincy across all formats. After briefly competing in politics, Shakib returned to play for his BPL team, Rangpur Riders.

However, persistent vision issues compelled him to depart the tournament midway to consult overseas doctors. Although no significant issues were found, Shakib continues to play for Rangpur.

Shakib's absence poses a significant challenge for Bangladesh, as he has been both a premier bowler and a reliable batsman for the team over the past decade.

Sri Lanka will aim to capitalize on his absence, while Bangladesh will strive to perform well in front of the home crowd despite missing their star player.
