Surrey Cricket Club has roped in rising Indian star Sai Sudharsan for their remaining three fixtures this County Championship 2023 season. As of now, Surrey are placed at the top of the Division One points table, and will resume their championship run on September 3 with a match against Warwickshire.

Sudharsan joins Surrey to fill English internationals’ slot

Surrey is currently falling short on its batting reserves. While Ollie Pope is out injured, Will Jacks and all-rounder Sam Curran are representing England in their ongoing white-ball series against New Zealand at home. Moreover, Tom Latham is also back on international duty after his brief stint with the club.

Following the announcement, Surrey’s director of cricket and former English international player Alec Stewart said that they roped in young Sai Sudharsan because he was highly recommended to him.

“With the busy schedule of international and domestic cricket around the world, I'm pleased to add Sai Sudharsan to our available squad of players. Sai has come highly recommended to me by people I hugely respect, including a couple of the greats of the Indian game, who have seen and worked closely with him," Stewart said.

Sai Sudharsan recently starred for Gujarat Titans in their runners-up campaign at the IPL 2023 season. Yet to make his Indian debut, the Tamil Nadu cricketer averages 42.71 in first-class levels.

In another County Championship development, Prithvi Shaw has agreed to return to Northamptonshire for the second half of 2024 England’s domestic season. The Indian batting prodigy recently bludgeoned 244 and 125* for Northamptonshire before knee injury curtailed his stay with the club.

"I'm so excited to be heading back to Northamptonshire next summer. Even though it was over quickly I really enjoyed my time there, it's a great club to be a part of and I felt so welcome by everyone immediately. I can't wait to get back over," Prithvi Shaw said upon signing an extension deal with Northamptonshire.
