Virat Kohli recently ended his three-year century drought by smacking 122* against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup 2022. Notably, the cricketer scored his runs as an opener in the absence of regular opening batter and captain Rohit Sharma.

Sharma has now hinted out at the possibility of Kohli opening the innings even in next month’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Sharma considers possibility of Kohli opening the innings

The Indian team is set to face Australia in three T20Is between September 20 and September 25. Ahead of the first match at Mohali, the Indian skipper interacted with the media and discussed possible opening combinations for the team. He said:

“It is always nice to have options available for you. It is important going into a World Cup that you have flexibility. You want the players to be in best shape batting at any position. When we try and do something new, that does not mean that's a problem.”

He also praised Kohli’s recent strings of scores in Asia Cup 2022, including his ton as an opener against Afghanistan.

“It is an option (Virat Kohli opening) for us, we will always keep that in mind. Since we have not taken a third opener, he opens for his franchise and he has done really well, so it is a definite option for us.”
