In a major announcement by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the upcoming elections have been scheduled by the apex body. To the unversed, the roles of BCCI President and IPL (Indian Premier League) Chairman are all set to go for elections after the incumbents' tenure ends.

BCCI's AGM & Elections To Take Place In Late September

In what is coming as major news, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that they will hold their 94th AGM, the Annual General Meeting, from 11:30 AM on September 28th at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.

It is worth mentioning that BCCI President Roger Binny has reached the maximum age limit, and the 70-year-old won't be able to contest elections any further. Meanwhile, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal has completed his six-year tenure, following which he will be required to serve a three-year cooling-off period, as previously set by the committee.

Meanwhile, Devajit Saikia, who is the current BCCI secretary, has been in his role for the last nine months, whereas he was previously the Joint Secretary for two years and three months, and will be allowed to continue in his position. Joint Secretaries Rohan Gauns Desai and Prabhtej Bhatia are in their first year and will also be allowed to continue as well.

Moreover, it has been revealed that one of Sanjay Naik (Mumbai Cricket Association Secretary) and Rajeev Shukla (BCCI Vice President) are likely to become the next IPL chairman. However, nothing is concrete yet, as on paper, things can go totally differently if one of them doesn't run for the elections.

If Shukla secures the IPL chairman position, it is likely that Rakesh Tiwari, the President of the Bihar Cricket Association, will apply for the BCCI Vice President's role to replace him.

Now, the focus will be on September 28th, when the office bearers will undergo elections and proceed according to the rules set by the association. While the National Sports Governance Act is also likely to come into force sometime this year, the BCCI had decided not to wait for that.

Roger Binny Set To Be Replaced As President

Regarding Binny, who turns 70 years old this year, he won't be allowed to contest elections, as the current constitution bars people above the age of 70 from taking a position in the BCCI and being elected as office bearers.

Whereas in his place, it will be quite a challenging task for the BCCI to elect his successor, considering it is already a top honorary position, but requires a player from the Indian cricket team with a great stature to lead the apex body.

Interestingly, Shukla, the current BCCI Vice President, has already served five years in the organisation, according to the Lodha Constitution. But if the National Sports Governance Act takes place before the next AGM, he would be allowed to continue despite completing his six-year tenure, as the governance bill doesn't require any mandatory cooling-off period.
