Mohammed Azharuddin reinstated as HCA President after Ombudsman calls removal illegal

Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin has been reinstated as the President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association by the order of the Ombudsman of HCA Justice (retd) Deepak Verma. Justice Verma termed the removal of Azharuddin as President of HCA by the Apex Council of the Association as illegal and unlawful.

The Ombudsman also temporarily disqualified the HCA Apex Council members K John Manoj, Vice President, R Vijayanand, Naresh Sharma, Surender Agarwal, Anuradha till the time they prove the complaints against them attain finality.

"Apex Council on its own accord cannot take such a decision. Therefore, I deem it appropriate to set aside the resolution (if any) passed by these five members in suspending the duly elected President, issuing a show-cause notice and direct them to refrain from any subsequent actions against the President of HCA, Mohammed Azharuddin," Justice (retd) Verma was quoted as saying by PTI.

"Therefore, I direct that Mohammed Azharuddin shall continue as President and all complaints against office bearers shall only be decided by the Ombudsman,” Justice Verma added in his decision.

Since the Apex Council did not follow the due procedure and used power not vested to them and also failed to recognise Justice Verma as the Ombudsman even after a High Court order, the members were disqualified till further notice.

“It is clear from the above, that these members have malafide intentions and do not want smooth functioning of HCA. I hereby direct that these members are temporarily disqualified from performing their duties as office bearers of the Apex Council till the time these Complaints attain finality," the Ombudsman said.

Azharuddin, who played more than 300 ODIs for India and has been HCA President for a long was unceremoniously removed by a meeting of the Apex Council on June 17. He challenged that order later on.

We are two different bowlers: Mitchell Swepson hopes to play alongside Adam Zampa as an asset for Australia

Australian leg spinner Mitchell Swepson, who played only his second game in the first match of the three-match T20I series against India last December is hopeful of playing alongside Adam Zampa in the upcoming West Indies series. The leggie who made his debut in international cricket against England way back in 2018 but didn’t get the chance to play more believes that he and Zampa could lay together as both of them are two different bowlers altogether. “I remember Zam saying time when I got picked for my first series against India last summer. He was excited, he said, ‘I love two leggies playing. And yeah it’s great, I think the more leggies the better.’,” Swepson said in a video posted by cricket.com.au on their official Twitter handle. “We are two different bowlers and are not trying to be like each other or use each other’s skills. It’s a weapon in itself that we have got two different leg spinners, trying to bowl differently and do different things,” added the 27-year-old, who has picked up seven wickets in the four T20Is that he has played so far. A Brisbane Heat player in the Big Bash, Swepson knows what to expect from the batters very well and according to him, the fact that Zampa and he don’t bowl similar lengths and line acts as an asset for Australia. “At the end of the day in T20 cricket, it comes down to serving variety. You usually go the journey when the same thing is being bowled. So having two different spinners is a bit of an asset for us (Australia) and hopefully, we can play together,” Swepson said. Having seen the success of Tabraiz Shamsi in the recently concluded West Indies South Africa series, it would be interesting to see if Australia fields two leggies and Swepson does get a chance or not in the first T20I on July 10 at the Daren Sammy Stadium in St. Lucia.

ENG vs SL: Rain robs England off unique treble clean sweep on Sri Lanka

What could have been an opportunity for England to assert a triple clean sweep on Sri Lanka, was washed away by rain as the third and final ODI of the three-match series at Bristol was abond0oned due to rain. Only one inning of the game was completed on which Sri Lanka were bowled out for 166 courtesy of a brilliant spell by Tom Curran. The senior Curran picked up four wickets for 35 runs in his 10 overs spell. Dasun Shanaka top scoured for Lankans with an unbeaten 48 from 65 balls. Other than Tom, David Willey and Chris Woakes picked up two wickets each while one wicket was taken by Adil Rashid. After the end of the first innings, rain overtook and the match had to be abandoned at the county ground. England, having beaten Sri Lanka 3-0 in the T20I series in June and 2-0 in the Tets series when they toured the island nation in January this year, had the chance to complete a treble of clean sweeps if the match was completed. The was no doubt that over the six matches, the English team had been ruthless and skipper Eoin Morgan reiterated the same as well. “We were dominant today, and we are delighted as we were ruthless. That has been the trend in the T20Is and ODIs, the guys haven't taken things for granted. The guys were willing to show character and fight at Cardiff too,” he said during the post-match presentation interview. For Sri Lankan captain Kusal Perera, it has been a painful tour, on and off the ground and he believes that his players would trust their skillset and express themselves more freely in the coming series against India at home. “It's a tough tour for us. We performed well in patches but it wasn't enough. We need to concentrate on our batting. The boys have to trust their ability and need to express themselves and that's the only way to move forward,” Perera said in the post-match interview. Willey, for his outstanding bowling across three matches and picking up nine wickets, was adjudged Man of the Series.

ENG W vs IND W | Coach Powar, captain Mithali commend 'find of England tour' Sneh Rana

Sneh Rana has been one of the finds of for Indian Women’s team on the England tour and coach Ramesh Powar agrees to it. In fact, he went as far as to claim her as the player who could be India’s crisis-manger going into the ODI World Cup and Commonwealth Games next year. Firstly her 80 match-saving runs in the Test and then 24 crucial runs at number seven along with a partnership breaking wicket of Lauren Winfield-Hill in the third ODI that helped India win the last game on Saturday, July 3, made Rana into a charmer of some sort. “I believe Sneh Rana is the find of this England tour,” Powar said in a video uploaded by BCCI on their official Twitter handle. “I am really happy for her. Being an off-spinner myself, I can see the talent and she looks like a player tailor-made for crunch situations. She completes our search for such a player who can soak up pressure when the big matches and big tournaments arrive,” he added. The coach however also confirmed that they were not fairly confident about playing her at first but with her hard work in the nets, she made her way into the team. “The way she was bowling in Southampton, we thought we should give her a chance. It was a difficult decision no doubt, playing two off-spinners in the squad. But she played her role to the core,” Powar said. The coach was not the only one praising Rana. Even Indian skipper Mitahli Raj, whit whom the all-rounder added crucial 50 runs for the sixth wicket, was impressed by her too. She believes that Rana has the potential to become India’s finisher, a player that the national team has been in an eternal search for. “That's a slot we've always looked for somebody who has the shots to clear the field - strong shots all around. And it helps to have a player there who can also bowl. So it's good to have her on the side,” Raj said about her Railways deputy. The Indian skipper also predicted a bright future for the 27-year-old who made comeback into the side after five years having played her first lot of international games in 2016 itself. "She's definitely shown that she does have the character in her to be built into a good player. In the current era, in modern cricket, allrounders play a very important role in the composition of the team,” she said. “I'm sure that she has a bigger role to play for India in the coming years,” she added about Rana who has so far played 9 ODIs, 5 T20Is and a solitary Test for India.

Coach Powar heaps praise on 'role model' Mithali Raj, outlines need for improvement in batting

India Women skipper Mithali Raj has shown over the course of the ODI series against England Women why she is still the number one bet for the country to win the World Cup in New Zealand next year. The 38-year-old hit three consecutive fifties in the series with the last one coming in a stellar run chase. Indian coach Ramesh Powar was delighted by the skipper’s performance, saying she deserved every accolade in the world. “I think she deserves every praise in the world out there. She has been a great server of the game for the past 22 years and she is a role model for a lot of girls out there,” Powar was heard saying in a video uploaded by the BCCI on Twitter. “She won us this game single-handedly. Chasing 220 on a low bounce track is not easy and she still got us over the line,” he added. However, the coach, who was appointed just ahead of this England series, feels that the team’s batting needs to get better if it aims to do well in the upcoming World Cup. “I think bowlers brought us back in this game and we have a lot to learn from this series. Bowling and fielding have improved immensely. Batting has to be up if we are aiming at the World Cup,” said the 43-year-old. Praising the bowling u5nit further, Powar also appreciated the efforts 5put in by senior player Jhulan Goswami inimrp5oving the team. “Jhulan Goswami is one of the legends of women’s cricket and her work ethic, preparations, commitment towards the game, towards the team and the dressing room and young players is commendable. It makes a huge difference to us as a team,” he said. The Indian te5am, having collected four points from a draw in Tests and a win in ODIs would at least look to win the T20I series 2-1 to square up in the entire tour with hosts England who are two pits ahead at six points courtesy their two wins in the ODI series. The shortest format begins with the first T20I at Northampton on July 8.
