SA20 commissioner Graeme Smith has given an insight into the auction process, format and schedule of the inaugural season of the tournament.

As it is already known, MI Cape Town, Durban Super Giants, Johannesburg Super Kings, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the six participating teams.

Although the exact dates are not out yet, the tentative window will be January-February 2023. The six venues finalized to host the tournament are Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Paarl, Pretoria and Gqeberha.

A total of 33 matches are slated to take place, with all the teams playing each other twice, followed by semi-finals and finals.

SA T20 Auction Details

Smith has revealed that 533 players are listed for the auction, but all of them are not expected to go under the hammer. In this list, 248 of them are South Africans.

In this case, the franchises are expected to follow the suit in IPL auctions to give a list of the players, they are interested in, which will further cut short the players list.

Each team can have a maximum of 17 players in their squad. The pre-auction direct-acquisition process witnessed teams grabbing 23 players, with Moeen Ali opting out of the tournament earlier this month.

The top three base prices for the auction are, Rand 1,750,000, Rand 1,700,000 and Rand 850,000. Jayden Seales and Odean Smith have set themselves the highest base price, while Tabraiz Shamsi and Dean Elgar are at the lowest of the top three base price brackets.

The overall purse amount of US$2 million is available for each team. The money available at D-day will be the amount left after pre-auction signings.

Squad combination

All franchises have been allowed to avail the services of seven overseas players, while the other ten should be South Africans.

A maximum of four overseas players will be permitted in the Playing XI.
