IPL 2022 | OneCricket's Underperformers of the Tournament

After a long journey of seventy-four games, the bandwagon of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 came to an end as Gujarat Titans (GT) were crowned the season fifteen champions after an enthralling encounter against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the finals.

While many names garnered all the attention from fans and critics for their spectacular performances, a few names were unremarkable this season and would want nothing else than forget this season and turn to a new chapter of their career.

After a lot of planning, discussing and analysing, our team at OneCricket have come to a consensus and present you with the Underperforming XI from the Indian Premier League 2022.

Rohit Sharma: Nightmare, this season has been nothing less than a nightmare for the Indian skipper, leading the Mumbai Indians. Sharma was retained for ₹15 crores ahead of the season and has been a letdown.

The team lost ten games this season, out of which eight came at a trot at the start of the season. Rohit himself was a flop, managing just 268 runs with an average below twenty.

Ishan Kishan (wk): This has been an average season for Kishan if we go by the numbers. Though, what makes it worse is the enormous price tag on his name. Mumbai Indians almost ruined their entire auction in hopes of securing the young wicket-keeper batter for ₹15.25 crores.

While the batter did find 418 runs this season, he scored the majority of them in bits and pieces, and his strike rate does give no favours, with the numbers languishing at 120.11 this season.

Kane Williamson (✈️ ): Sunrisers Hyderabad went all in on the Black Caps skipper to lead their franchise after ousting David Warner. The franchise paid a retention sum of ₹14 crores to secure the services of the Kiwi batter.

However, Williamson seemed a shadow of his former self as he managed just 216 runs this season with an average of 19.64, while his strike rate fell below the three-figure mark.

Mayank Agarwal(c): The PBKS skipper is undoubtedly one of the biggest letdowns of this season. Mayank was retained for a sum of ₹12 crores this season and has failed on all fronts.

The batter has managed just 196 runs this time around and has a poor average of 16.33, which does not suit a batter of his calibre.

Shahrukh Khan: ₹9 crores for a player who did not even play nine games, this has been the story for TNPL superstar Shahrukh Khan. This has been a disastrous season for the Tamil Nadu born cricketer as he could only manage 117 runs with a mediocre strike rate of around 118.

Kieron Pollard (✈️ ): The West Indian veteran has been a cornerstone for Mumbai Indians for a long time, and it seems as if it might be the right time to let him go. Pollard seemed out of touch the entire season and hurt Mumbai by a fair margin.

Retained by the franchise for a sum of ₹6 crores, the player could only manage 144 runs in eleven games. He was somewhat decent with the ball at times, picking up five wickets.

Ravindra Jadeja: Chennai fans were left stunned by the performance produced by their side this season. Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja had a hellish season that saw him being sacked from the captaincy role.

While Jadeja was retained for a massive sum of ₹16 crores, the all-rounder could just manage 116 runs with the bat. He was no better with the ball as he could just garner five wickets to his name.

Shardul Thakur: Delhi went all guns blazing for Shardul, acquiring him ₹10.75 crores. However, the player perhaps failed to justify his massive price tag this season.

Shardul had 129 runs with the bat, which was a plus point this season. Though his performance with the ball left a lot to be desired as he managed just fifteen wickets majority of them coming in a cluster.

Pat Cummins (✈️ ): The Australian skipper returned to the Knight Riders for a sum of ₹7.25 crores, while he had to leave mid-season due to a back injury, he left a lot to be desired other than a few cameos in the first half.

Cummins had seven wickets in five games, while he had 63 runs to his name which included an all guns blazing knock of 56 runs against Mumbai.

Varun Chakravarthy: The mystery spinner has been one of the biggest letdowns since the T20 World Cup in 2021. KKR retained the player for his heroics in the previous edition, but it looks like the shine has faded off quite earlier than expected.

While KKR retained him for ₹8 crores, Varun had just six wickets in eleven outings.

Mohammed Siraj: Disappointing would be the exact word if you had to pick a word to describe Siraj’s performance this season. The Indian pacer was retained by the franchise for his crucial contributions to the side for a sum of ₹8 crores, but he could only manage nine wickets in the fifteen games he played, talk about a horror show.
