In a significant development, the International Cricket Council has penalised India and Australia for maintaining slow over rate in the recently concluded World Test Championship final at the Oval in London.

After the game concluded on Sunday, India and Australia were found five and four overs short, respectively, by the match officials.

So, the teams were charged for breaching article 2.22 of the ICC code of conduct, which imposes a 20 per cent penalty on the players for every over their side fails to deliver in the allotted time. As a result, India and Australia were fined 100 and 80 per cent of their match fees, respectively.

In another notable event, ICC sanctioned promising Indian opener Shubman Gill after finding him guilty of breaching article 2.7 of the ICC code of conduct related to public criticism or inappropriate comment regarding an incident in an international match.

Notably, Gill publicly criticised TV umpire Richard Kettleborough's controversial decision, which compelled him to make his way back to the dugout during India's second innings. This behaviour by the youngster was deemed inappropriate by the governing body, which penalised him an additional 15 per cent of his match fees.

Regarding the WTC final, Australia crushed India by a whopping 209-run margin to lift the prestigious mace and etch their name in history. Up next, Pat Cummins and co. will take on arch-rivals England in the much-awaited Ashes series starting this 16th.
