Hobart Hurricanes Star Who Smashed Haris Rauf In BBL 2023-24 On Trial For Sexual Offence

Nikhil Chaudhary, who plays for Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL, is on trial for sexually assaulting a woman in a night bar in May 2021. The prosecution has told the District Court of Townsville that the girl was raped in the cricketer’s car on the Flinders Street, leaving her injured and bleeding. 

The woman’s mother has also confirmed the mentioned event, telling the court that she went to sleep at around 11.30 in the night and missed her daughter’s call at 3.11 am, soon after the attack. When she woke up, at around 3.55 am she reached out to her daughter. 

The woman's mother told the court,

"I couldn't hear much because she was crying, she sounded upset. I asked her why she was crying, and she said she might be going to court. She told me she met this guy at the nightclub, they hung out for a bit, and she mentioned she went out of the club with him and got into the car with him."

A forensic expert, Nicole Atkins, suggested that they cannot conclusively tell if the culprit has indeed assaulted the woman. Nikhil, for now, is pleading guilty. 

The defence barrister asked the expert if there was any conclusive observation to know how the woman got injured to which the expert said that the history provided to her suggested that the assault could or could not be the cause of the injuries. 

Constable Alexandra Smith, who also spoke about the incident told the court that the girl wasn’t under any influence of alcohol. 

“She didn't appear under the influence. She was coherent and walking fine and speaking fine and didn't appear to be affected by alcohol. She told me she had been inside a vehicle with a man and that the man sexually assaulted her,” Smith stated. 

Chaudhary had an impressive BBL stint with Hobart Hurricanes, amassing 154 runs and scalping five wickets in nine outings. However, the controversy might hamper his career in an adverse way.
