Greg Barclay, Imran Khwaja set for a potential re-match for ICC chair elections

Greg Barclay and Imran Khwaja are likely to clash once again for the ICC Chair elections. The elections are scheduled to be held in Melbourne next month, after the semi-finals of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 are played out in Australia.

Notably, Barclay defeated Khwaja in their previous face-off. The New Zealander was elected as ICC Chairman during the November 2020 election, after receiving influential support from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

ICC chair elections poised for a re-match

It remains to be seen if Imran Khwaja will be competing in next month’s ICC Chair elections in Melbourne. However, as per a report from ESPNCricinfo, the Singapore-based cricket administrator will be nominated for the same, thus setting up a re-match for the throne between him and Barclay.

Back in July this year, Barclay had expressed his desire to continue as ICC Chairman for a second term. While speaking with the reporters in Birmingham, he said:

“I am available for re-election if members want.”

Meanwhile, Khwaja retained much popularity during Barclay’s reign by attending multiple ICC committees. The Singaporean also discussed and look into the issue of the condition of women’s cricket in Afghanistan.

Despite lacking the support from the all-powerful BCCI, several of his supporters still believe he can emerge triumphant in next month’s election. If he accepts the nomination from ICC and ends up winning, he would become the first ICC Chairman from outside a full member nation.
