South African Test skipper Dean Elgar has hinted that his side will need to take some tough decisions ahead of the third Test of the three-match series at the Oval.

After winning the first Test at Lord's in an emphatic fashion, the Proteas were thumped down by an innings and 85 runs in the second Test, which leaves the series tied at 1-1 going into the third and final fixture in London.

Elgar was in the focus of the loss for his questionable decision-making right from the toss. The Proteas skipper was found guilty of changing the winning combination by dropping Marco Jansen for Simon Harmer.

Few tough calls will be made: Elgar

Speaking on the defeat after the second Test, a dejected Dean Elgar spelled the beans out and said a few tough decisions will be made for the decider Test starting September 8.

"A few tough decisions will be coming our way. With Rassie ruled out, we have to replace him. That's a definite. Whether that's the only one we will make. We've got a few days. We've got nearly two weeks. We'll go away and get our options and try and get better combinations," said Dean Elgar.

In another significant loss, Rassie van der Dussen has been ruled out of that match with a fractured finger and his place in the squad will be taken by all-rounder Wiaan Mulder. Elgar indicated that the visitors will have to make more than one change for the series finale.

"The bottom line is we need runs from that middle order and that is letting us down quite a bit, to be frank, and bold and honest. That's the truth. As much as guys don't want to hear it, they know that already. But for now, Rassie's position has to be filled.
