England women’s team lost to New Zealand in the bronze medal match at Birmingham. To make matters worse for the hosts, England’s T20I veteran Sophie Ecclestone was handed an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Ecclestone was found to have breached the Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The article itself relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”

The incident occurred during the 18th over of the England innings against the White Ferns. The 23-year-old was batting at 18 before her innings was cut short by New Zealand’s senior speedster Sophie Devine.

On her way back to the pavilion, Ecclestone was seen knocking over a chair with her bat. The cricketer admitted to the offence without any need of a formal hearing and on-field umpires Lauren Agenbag and Eloise Sheridan levelled the charges against her.

As per the ICC norms, a Level 1 breach carries a minimum penalty of a reprimand, a maximum penalty of up to 50 percent of a player’s match fee as well as one or two demerit points.
