Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka has opened up on the team's nerve-wracking victory against Bangladesh on Thursday (1 September) in Dubai. In this pursuit, Sri Lanka sealed their place in the Super Four stage as well.

Batting first, Bangladesh posted a strong total of 183, with the top contributions of Afif Hossain (39) and Mehidy Hasan (38). For Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga and Chamika Karunaratne scalped two wickets each.

In response, Sri Lanka got a good start with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis adding 45 runs at an asking rate. Mendis delivered a fighting knock of 60 off 37 balls, amid the flurry of wickets at the other end.

Coming at six, Shanaka smacked 45 off 33 to keep the team in the hunt. In the end, Karunaratne and Asitha Fernando played quickfire knocks to take the team home, with four balls to spare.

In this regard, the 30-year-old leader thinks the chase was ultimately successful due to the base formed by the openers.

"Yes, in the middle period, I thought it was tough. But when I and Kusal were there, I knew it was achievable. Absolutely. The openers did the job to set up the base and we spoke about that and because of that, we chased this one down successfully," said Shanaka.

Dasun Shanaka talks on his promotion

Shanaka thinks it was critical for him to come up the order, in the team's objective to chase down a stiff total and secure an entry into the next stage.

"I thought of promoting myself, but it's about the team's point of view. I have to play the role of a finisher here and it's the team's interest that comes first to me."

Lions will face the stern challenge of Afghanistan on Saturday (September 3) in Sharjah, which will mark the beginning of the Super-four stage.
