Whenever Ravichandran Ashwin plays Test cricket, nowadays it seems like he's approaching a new milestone, such has been the impact of India’s premier all-rounder. In the upcoming fifth Test, the wily off-spinner has the opportunity to become the Indian player with the most number of five-wicket hauls in the history of Test cricket.

In the fourth Test of the ongoing five-match series against England in Ranchi, Ashwin claimed his 35th five-wicket haul, matching Kumble's record in just 99 matches. He now trails only Muthiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, and Richard Hadlee on the overall list. Remarkably, Ashwin has secured 12 fifers in the third innings, second only to Muralitharan.

The upcoming Dharamsala Test presents another opportunity for Ashwin to cement his legacy. A five-wicket haul would elevate him above Kumble and mark his 36th overall, underlining his prowess as a proven match-winner with the red-ball.

Following Ashwin and Kumble on the list are Harbhajan Singh (25), Kapil Dev (23), and BS Chandrasekhar (16). Among all the greats, Ashwin’s average and strike rate are far better than those of others.

Most five-fers for India in Tests:

  • Anil Kumble: 35 fifers in 132 matches
  • Ravichandran Ashwin: 35 fifers in 99 matches
  • Harbhajan Singh: 25 fifers in 103 matches.
  • Kapil Dev: 23 fifers in 131 matches.
  • BS Chandrasekhar: 16 fifers in 58 matches

Ashwin's dominance is particularly evident at home, where 27 of his five-wicket hauls have come. He now trails only Muralitharan in this regard, highlighting his unrivalled success on familiar turf.

Moreover, Ashwin recently surpassed Kumble as the highest wicket-taker in Tests on Indian soil, amassing 354 scalps from 59 home matches at a remarkable average of 21.33. Additionally, he achieved the milestone of 400 Test wickets in Asia.

In the ongoing series, Ashwin has further enhanced his credentials, claiming 17 wickets, including a single five-wicket haul in the Ranchi Test. As he prepares to play his 100th Test in Dharamsala, Ashwin's legacy as one of India's greatest match-winners in red-ball cricket is secure.

With over 500 wickets, numerous five-wicket and ten-wicket hauls, and several significant contributions with the bat, Ashwin's Test career is nothing short of iconic. His versatility and consistency make him a vital cog in the Indian cricket team, and his relentless pursuit of excellence continues to inspire many budding cricketers around the globe.
