IPL 2024, SRH vs RCB Match Villain - Du Plessis' Lack Of Tactical Sense Sees DK's Valiant Effort Go In Vain

The 30th match in the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) witnessed a record-breaking clash between RCB and SRH. This match, played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, now stands at the top of the list for the most aggregate runs scored in a T20 match (549).

It was a dead track, and the batters unleashed their full potential on the bowlers. Among the super-human batting efforts from both sides, the one that truly stood out was that of Dinesh Karthik. He displayed sheer skill and determination, playing a magnificent knock of 83 runs from 35 deliveries, a performance that won the hearts of critics and fans despite ending on the wrong side.

While there was nothing on the deck for the bowlers, RCB could have ended on the other side of the match if their skipper, Faf du Plessis and the management had shown more tactical awareness.

Questionable Selections

RCB went in with four faster bowlers and depended mainly on Will Jacks's per-time spin to work on this deck. By the mid-way stage of the SRH innings, the lapse in this strategy was quite clear. The Pacers could only control the run flow when they took the pace off the delivery or bowled the yorker lengths. The fact that the lack of pace was working better than the other variations made it evident that RCB needed a spinner in their line-up.

This was made even more prominent when, in the second innings, SRH introduced Mayank Markande as an impact player. He picked up the crucial wickets of Kohli and Patidar to cease the momentum in the RCB innings.

Karn Sharma has played only a single game in this IPL and has not been used since. What is the use of keeping a bowler with so much experience in the league on the bench? While the pacers were being taken to the cleaners, his wrist spin might have worked; at least, there was no harm in trying that.

Right Call Wrong Decision in Toss

The SRH batting has already earned a reputation for firepower in this tournament. The strategy of backing your strength might have worked against another team, but by deciding to field first on that deck, Faf played right into the hands of the opposition. The result could have been different if RCB batted first without the scoreboard pressure.

No plan B during bowling

The RCB bowlers lacked execution and had no other plan to fall back on. They tried to hit the deck while taking the pace of the delivery. It worked for a few deliveries, but once it became predictable, the RCB bowlers looked helpless in front of the power hitters of SRH. Barring Reece Topley, no bowlers tried Yorkers, or no one was seen changing the angle and trying something different. If they had changed their strategy for a couple of overs, SRH could have scored 15-20 runs less, which could have made the difference.
