The 25-year-old Sri Lankan opening batter Pathum Nissanka recently stepped on a rare milestone as he became the first Sri Lankan player to score a double century in international Cricket. Nissanka smashed the double ton during the first ODI match of Afghanistan’s tour of Sri Lanka on 9th February, Friday.

The Afghanistan squad were unprepared to see the wrath of the young opening batter as he put 182 runs on the board with 26.2 overs. Nissanka then accelerated his innings alongside Sadeera Samarawickrama, and scored 210 runs off 139 deliveries as he entertained the spectators with 20 boundaries and eight magnificent sixes with a strike rate of 151.08.

Here are the list of records broken by Pathum Nissanka during his fine knock.

1. Highest ODI score by a Sri Lankan cricketer

After passing the veteran Sri Lankan player Sanath Jayasuriya, Pathum Nissanka made an astonishing mark in the history of Cricket with his double century. The previous record holder of highest ODI score, Jayasuriya had scored 189 runs in 2000 against India which made Nissanka the first player to score 190+ for Sri Lanka in ODIs.

2. Third fastest double century in ODI

Pathum Nissanka surpassed the legendary Caribbean and Indian batters Chris Gayle and Virender Sehwag who took 138 and 140 balls respectively to score their double century. Nissanka scored his first double century in ODIs within 136 balls as he thrashed the Afghani bowlers.

3. First player to score 150+ in his 50th ODI match

Pathum Nissanka created a unique record as he became the first ever player in ODI to score more than 150 runs in their 50th ODI innings. While many players have played remarkably in their 50th ODI match no player has scored over 150 runs.

4. Second highest ODI score against an Asian team

The Afghanistan squad has not had a great experience when it comes to batsmen scoring double centuries against them, considering the recent likes of Glenn Maxwell who single-handedly scored 201 runs to lead his team in the semifinals of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

Nissanka matched Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan - who scored 210 against Bangladesh in 2022. However, Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s iconic knock of 264 against Sri Lanka remains at the top.
